Local moves are charged hourly, which means the whole job is about efficiency — how quickly a crew can work without cutting corners. Most of what determines the final number happens before anyone picks anything up: how well the home is packed, how close the truck can park, and how well the crew knows the route.
We have been doing this from our yard in Carmichael since 1979, across Sacramento County and into Placer.
What an hourly local move includes
- A written estimate after an in-person or video survey, with a not-to-exceed price
- Furniture disassembly and reassembly — beds, tables, modular units
- Floor and wall protection throughout both properties
- Blanket wrapping and shrink wrapping of furniture
- Loading, transport and placement in the room you want it
- Appliance disconnection and reconnection where it does not require a licensed trade
How hourly pricing actually works
California requires a mover operating within the state to inspect your belongings visually before issuing a written estimate. Phone and internet estimates are prohibited, and an estimate given that way may not be enforceable — so the survey is not a sales call, it is a legal requirement that protects you.
What you receive is a not-to-exceed price: the maximum you can be charged. It cannot rise unless you request additional services, and those have to be recorded in a written Change Order that you agree to.
The things that genuinely move the number:
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Carry distance | How far the truck parks from the door. The biggest single variable in Midtown and East Sacramento |
| Stairs and lifts | Flights of stairs, or waiting on a shared service lift |
| Packing readiness | Boxes sealed and labelled before arrival versus a crew packing as they go |
| Access at both ends | Gates, HOA restrictions, permitted moving hours |
| Disassembly | Beds, large tables and modular furniture add time |
Where we work
Our regular service area runs across Sacramento County — Sacramento, Carmichael, Fair Oaks, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove and Folsom — and north into Placer County for Roseville, Rocklin and Lincoln.
That matters more than it sounds. A crew that knows which East Sacramento streets have tree canopy too low for a full-height truck, or which Midtown buildings require a lift reservation, loses less time than one working it out on the day. On an hourly job, local knowledge is money.
Making an hourly move cheaper
The honest advice, which costs us hours:
- Be completely packed before the crew arrives. Everything sealed, labelled and stacked. Boxes still open when the truck pulls up are the most common cause of an over-running job.
- Sort parking in advance. A truck that parks fifty feet from the door instead of three hundred saves real money. In the City of Sacramento that may mean arranging temporary parking restrictions ahead of the day.
- Empty the furniture. Dressers and desks with full drawers take longer and are harder to carry safely.
- Declutter first. Fewer items is fewer hours. Anything you would not pay to replace is not worth paying to move.
- Book an early slot in summer. Sacramento regularly runs above 100°F in July and August. First light is faster and safer than mid-afternoon.
Apartments, condos and HOA communities
Buildings add rules, and the rules are the part people forget.
Many apartment and condo buildings require a certificate of insurance from the mover before granting access, naming the building owner as additional insured. These take time to issue, so tell us as early as you can. Buildings also commonly restrict moving hours, require the service lift to be reserved, and specify floor protection.
HOA communities — common in Elk Grove, Folsom, Rocklin and Lincoln — may restrict truck size, access hours and weekend moves. Check with the HOA before the day rather than at the gate.
What is not included
Hazardous materials cannot go on the truck under any circumstances: petrol and lighter fluid, propane tanks including empty ones, paint and solvents, aerosols, pool chemicals, fireworks, ammunition, fire extinguishers and car batteries. Perishable and frozen food is also excluded.
Plan to run these down or dispose of them in the weeks before the move.
If something is damaged
Claims must be made in writing within nine months of delivery. Photograph anything valuable before it is loaded, and make sure existing damage is noted on the inventory before the crew starts rather than after they finish.
