Fair Oaks is our closest neighbour. Our yard is in Carmichael, a few minutes down Fair Oaks Boulevard, which means a Fair Oaks job has about the shortest travel time of anywhere we work — and on an hourly local move, that goes in your favour.
It is also, for its size, one of the more awkward places in the region to get a truck into.
The terrain and the lanes
Fair Oaks is unincorporated Sacramento County, and much of it was laid out long before anyone was thinking about a 26-foot box truck. The older parts — particularly the lanes running down toward the bluff and the American River — are narrow, winding, and in places steep.
What that means in practice:
- Some streets cannot take a full-size truck at all, or cannot take one that then needs to turn around. We sometimes work a smaller vehicle or carry further.
- Driveways are often narrow, sloped, or both.
- Overhead clearance is a real constraint. Fair Oaks has heavy mature oak canopy, and on the older lanes it hangs low enough to stop a full-height truck.
- Properties back onto the bluff with long approaches and sometimes no turning space.
We survey Fair Oaks jobs in person for this reason more than any other. The inventory is rarely the question; the approach is.
The Village
The old village centre has its own character and its own constraints — small period buildings, narrow frontages, limited parking and shared access.
Commercial moves in and around the Village are worth planning carefully: there is often nowhere to put a truck for an extended period, which argues for an early start and a tighter, better-prepared job. Our commercial moving page covers how we phase business relocations.
The housing stock is unusually varied
Unlike Elk Grove or Rocklin, where most houses were built within a couple of decades of each other, Fair Oaks is a genuine mix. Early cottages near the village, mid-century ranch homes, substantial custom houses on large oak-shaded lots, and later infill.
That variety is why we do not quote Fair Oaks from a room count. A four-bedroom house here might be a flat single-storey with a double drive, or a split-level on a slope with a long carry and a low branch over the entrance. Those are very different jobs.
What we do here
- Local moving — hourly, written not-to-exceed price
- Long-distance and interstate — binding estimates to all 50 states
- Senior moving and downsizing — a significant share of our Fair Oaks work
- Packing and crating, piano and specialty and storage
Downsizing out of a long-held house
A lot of Fair Oaks moves are households leaving a property they have been in for decades, often on a larger lot than they now need. Those moves are mostly about deciding what comes, not about carrying.
We work at the household's pace on these, and we would always rather start the conversation early. Our senior moving page sets out the approach, including the single most useful step — getting the new floor plan and measuring before deciding anything.
Practical advice specific to Fair Oaks
Send us a photograph of your street and driveway when you book. Nowhere else in our service area does this save as much time. A picture taken from the kerb tells us whether we need a smaller vehicle.
Flag low branches. If you have had a delivery truck struggle, we will too.
Allow for the oak litter in autumn and the slope in wet weather. A sloped gravel drive after rain is not somewhere a loaded truck should be.
Estimates
California requires a visual inspection before a written estimate — phone and internet estimates are prohibited and may not be enforceable. In Fair Oaks the survey earns its keep: the access, not the contents, is what determines the quote.
You get a not-to-exceed price: the maximum chargeable unless you request extra services recorded in writing.
