Everything you need to know about moving with A Better Moving — answered honestly and clearly.
Moving Questions
Your Questions, Answered
How far in advance should I book my move?
We recommend booking at least 2–3 weeks in advance for local moves, and 4–6 weeks for long-distance or international moves. That said, we regularly accommodate last-minute and same-day moves — call us and we'll do our best to make it work.
Do you charge by the hour or by weight?
Local moves are typically charged hourly based on crew size and truck. Long-distance and interstate moves are generally priced by weight and mileage. We always provide a detailed written estimate before your move so there are zero surprises at delivery.
What happens if something gets damaged during my move?
We are fully licensed and insured. In the rare event of damage, we handle all claims promptly and professionally. Our crews are trained to prevent damage in the first place — using furniture pads, shrink wrap, and careful loading techniques — but you are fully protected if anything does occur.
Are your movers employees or independent contractors?
All of our movers are direct employees of A Better Moving — not day laborers or subcontractors. Our crews have years of experience working together, and we take full responsibility for their professionalism and performance on every job.
Do you disassemble and reassemble furniture?
Yes. Our crews disassemble beds, desks, shelving units, and other large furniture as needed, and reassemble everything at your destination. We bring all necessary tools and won't leave until your home is set up and you are happy.
Do you provide packing materials and boxes?
Yes — we sell professional-grade moving boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, shrink wrap, tape, wardrobe boxes, and more. We also offer a full packing service where our crew packs your entire home. When we pack it, we own the outcome — zero breakage track record.
Can you move specialty items like pianos, safes, and hot tubs?
Absolutely — specialty items are one of our strengths. We have moved thousands of grand and upright pianos, church organs, heavy gun safes, hot tubs, spas, and large antiques. We carry the right equipment and have the trained personnel to handle them safely.
Do you offer storage between moves?
Yes. We offer short- and long-term storage solutions for household goods and commercial inventory. Our facilities are secured and monitored, and we can arrange pickup and re-delivery on your schedule. Just let us know when you book.
How do I get an accurate estimate?
The most accurate estimates come from an in-home walkthrough, which we offer free of charge. We can also provide detailed phone or online estimates. Either way, your estimate will be written, itemized, and fully transparent — no vague quotes that change at delivery.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept cash, check, and major credit cards. Payment terms are discussed and agreed upon upfront as part of your written estimate. We never demand unexpected payment at delivery — a practice unfortunately common with less reputable movers.
Do you move people internationally?
Yes — we are a full-service freight forwarder with extensive international shipping experience. We have moved clients to Spain, West Africa, Pennsylvania, and destinations worldwide. We handle all carrier coordination, customs documentation, and crating for fragile or high-value items.
What areas do you serve?
We are based in Carmichael, CA and serve the full Greater Sacramento region including Elk Grove, Roseville, Folsom, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, and more. We also handle moves throughout all of California, all 50 US states, and international destinations worldwide.
Pro Tips
Packing Tips from Our Crew
45 years of moves taught us a few things. Here are the tips our crew swears by.
Tip 01
Pack heavy items in small boxes
Books, tools, and canned goods should go in small boxes. Large boxes packed with heavy items are hard to lift and risk tearing. Small boxes stay manageable and protect your back — and ours.
Tip 02
Label every box on the side, not the top
When boxes are stacked, you can only see the sides. Label each box with the room it belongs in AND a brief description of contents. This saves hours when unloading and unpacking at your new home.
Tip 03
Use clothing to wrap fragile items
T-shirts, towels, and socks make excellent padding for dishes, glasses, and decorative items. It saves on bubble wrap costs, protects your fragiles, and means you are packing two things at once.
Tip 04
Fill boxes completely — no empty space
Half-full boxes collapse when stacked and shift during transport. Fill gaps with packing paper, towels, or soft items. A firm, full box protects its contents far better than a partially packed one.
Tip 05
Pack an "open first" box
Pack one clearly marked box with everything you will need the first night — toilet paper, phone charger, coffee maker, a change of clothes, snacks, and basic toiletries. Load it last so it comes off the truck first.
Tip 06
Photograph electronics before unplugging
Before disconnecting your TV, stereo, or computer setup, take a photo of the cables. You will thank yourself when setting up at the new place. Use zip ties and label bags for cords to keep everything organized.
