Moving with Kids and Pets: Keeping Everyone Calm

Moving Day Is Overwhelming for Little Ones

Children and pets are sensitive to disruption. The chaos of moving day — strangers in the home, furniture disappearing, boxes everywhere — can trigger anxiety, behavioral changes, and stress. A little preparation goes a long way.

For Kids: Involve Them Early

Children handle change better when they feel part of the process. Let them pack their own special box of toys and treasures that travels with them (not on the truck). Talk about the new home excitedly — new bedroom, new yard, new adventures. Visit the new neighborhood before the move if possible.

  • Let kids help label boxes for their room
  • Set up their bedroom first at the new home so they have a safe, familiar space
  • Maintain normal routines as much as possible on move day
  • Arrange for kids to spend move day with a trusted family member or friend

For Pets: Keep Them Safe and Calm

Move day is dangerous for pets — open doors, unfamiliar people, and general commotion create escape opportunities and serious stress. The safest approach is to arrange for pets to stay elsewhere on move day entirely.

If that is not possible, confine pets to one closed room with water, food, and their bed. Place a note on the door so the moving crew knows not to open it. Update your pet's ID tags with the new address before move day.

After the Move

Give everyone time to adjust. Children may need a few weeks to feel settled. Pets may act out or seem anxious for a week or two. This is normal. Maintain routines, provide extra attention, and let the adjustment happen at its own pace.
